Mark Ryan (PhD, National University of Ireland, Galway) is a Postdoctoral Researcher at the Department of Philosophy, University of Twente. He is currently working on an interdisciplinary project (SHERPA), involving 11 partners from 6 European countries. This project is a European Union Horizon 2020 project (2018-2021, budget €3 million) and will focus on the ethical, social and human rights implications of smart information systems (data analytics and artificial intelligence) within a European context. He has previously worked as a Postdoctoral Researcher on the MARIO Project (Horizon 2020, budget €4 million, 2015-2018). This project assessed the difficulties of loneliness and isolation among people with dementia and the possibility of using service robots to ameliorate some these issues. He has published on the topics of the ethical implementation of service robots, but his primary research focus has been to the field of environmental ethics, culminating in his 2016 monograph: Human Values, Environmental Ethics and Sustainability.
