bias

“A bias is a tendency, inclination, or prejudice toward or against something or someone.”(Psychology Today 2019)

Biases can be positive, such as a bias towards caring for others or away from crime. However, biases tend to be based on assumptions rather than evidence or logical thought. This means that bias can lead to poor judgement and discriminatory action. A combination of individual biases and other factors can lead to structural biases, such as the well-known publication bias towards positive research findings. There are two main ways in which individual researchers can tackle bias: Debiasing and Reflexivity. (See also Cognitive Bias)
