SHERPA artist Tijmen Schep is exploring algorithms that try to predict your BMI (body mass index) from just a photo of your face. In this blogpost, he dives into the various open-source projects he found online. He says it’s like “going on a safari”, where you see a wide range of creations.
There are some interesting findings, such as academic research that’s based on data from Hollywood gossip websites, A Google project that grabs photos from people who are proudly sharing their weightloss on Reddit, and another that uses American arrest records to train its algorithms.
Throughout the safari, he comments on the issues around scientific rigor and algorithmic discrimination that are lurking beneath the shiny surface of these “AI” projects.
